Thank Goodness I’m Not the Only One!

I was reading my friend Peggy Richardson’s blog recently and came across her description of how much she enjoyed her time on the ferry:

“Time on the ferry is like gold to me. My 13-month-old is strapped securely into her carseat, and is kept happy with toys and people passing outside the car window to distract her. That means that if I lose myself in an activity which requires my full concentration, there is a significantly lower chance of her accidentally maiming herself while I perform this.”

(See her full post at: http://peggyrichardson.blogspot.com/2007/07/writing-reminder.html)

I found myself laughing out loud because I knew EXACTLY what she was talking about!
And I noticed that I found such relief to hear that I’m not the only one who revels in a moment of freedom when my toddler is strapped down for a little while!

Why is it that we hold this guilt inside and fear that we’re the only ones experiencing or thinking these things?

I feel great about my parenting – yet I still feel such relief to hear someone say out loud the things that I think to myself!

Let’s learn from that and share more – expect to be perfect less!  The world doesn’t benefit from an illusion of perfection (because it’s always an illusion, no matter where you see it!).  The world benefits from real people being honest and sharing their imperfections.

Because it’s in our imperfections that we show our humanity – and that humanity is not our humiliation but our strength, because we can all bond together to support each other as we really are!

Thanks for validating me – at least I know I’m not the only mother who is trying to teach her toddler that the dustbuster is actually a toy that they can use all over the house. Link ya later…
